Which A-Level Subjects You Need

To study engineering at UC, two A-Level subjects are essential: Mathematics and Physics. Whether you’ll also need Chemistry depends on the engineering specialisation you want to pursue.

Here’s how the Chemistry requirement differs across UC’s eight engineering disciplines:

Chemistry is required for: Chemical and Process, Civil, Forest, and Mechanical Engineering.
Chemistry is not required for: Computer, Electrical and Electronic, Mechatronics, and Software Engineering.

So, if you’re interested in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or Software Engineering, you can focus on strong results in Mathematics and Physics. However, if you’re planning to study Chemical and Process, Civil, Forest, or Mechanical Engineering, you’ll also need A-Level Chemistry to meet the entry requirements.

The A-Level Grades You Need

For Cambridge (CIE) A-Levels, you’ll generally need a grade D or better in Mathematics and Physics, or a grade A at AS Level in each subject. If your chosen engineering specialisation requires Chemistry, you’ll also need a grade D or better at A-Level (or grade A at AS Level).

The accelerated September pathway is a fast-track into BE(Hons): you start online study from home before you transition to UC’s Christchurch campus and continue into the BE(Hons) programme. That means less time away from home and a lower total tuition bill.

Here is how the year unfolds:

July–August: Study Python programming online from Malaysia — you do not need to be in New Zealand yet.
Late August to early November: On campus for your first two courses — Foundations of Engineering and Introduction to Programming for Engineers.
Late November to early February: Engineering Mathematics plus one course for your chosen engineering branch.
2027 onward: Full-time on campus, completing years two, three and four of the degree.

Because it is a fast-track, the bar is higher than standard entry. Eligible students will generally need a B grade in Mathematics, Physics, and, where applicable, Chemistry

The good thing about this programme is you get to graduate sooner, pay for less total time abroad, and start your engineering career up to a year earlier than the standard track.

If your A-Level results fall just short of direct entry, you’re not stuck. UC’s Diploma in University Studies (International) is a one-year pathway that leads straight into the second year of the BE(Hons) degree.

The Diploma in University Studies (International) is a 12-month programme — eight courses over three trimesters — taught on campus by UC International College. After successfully completing the diploma, you’ll progress directly into the second year of the engineering degree alongside students who entered through the standard pathway.

It also has a more accessible English language requirement—the equivalent of IELTS 5.5, with no band lower than 5.0—and includes additional academic and English language support to help you transition confidently into university study.
