How the Accelerated Bachelor of Engineering Pathway Works

A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), or BE(Hons), is typically a four-year professional engineering degree, but UC’s accelerated pathway is about 3.25 years for high-achieving international students living outside New Zealand. For the September intake pathway, you’ll begin your studies online from home before transitioning to UC’s Christchurch campus. By completing selected courses earlier and following an accelerated schedule, you can graduate sooner while reducing your overall tuition and living costs.

Here’s the timeline at a glance:

  1. July–August: Study Python programming online from Malaysia. UC sends you the course material — you don’t need to be in New Zealand yet.
  2. 31 August – 7 November: On campus at UC for your first two courses — Foundations of Engineering and Introduction to Programming for Engineers.
  3. 23 November 2026 – 7 February 2027: Engineering Mathematics plus one course tied to your chosen engineering discipline.
  4. 2027–2029: Study full-time on campus, complete the 200-, 300- and 400-level components of your degree.

By accelerating the early stages of the programme, you’ll progress through your degree more quickly and enter the workforce sooner than students following the standard pathway.

Entry Requirements: A-Level and IB

To be eligible for UC’s accelerated engineering pathway, you’ll need strong results in mathematics and science subjects. Here are the details:

  • A-Level (Cambridge / CIE): minimum B grades in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.
  • IB: at least 6 at HL in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, with the diploma awarded. The English language requirement is met if you have completed IB English Language A (Literature or Language and Literature) or IB English Language B at HL. Any IB mathematics subject covers the numeracy requirement.

UC’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) allows you to specialise in one of eight engineering disciplines, helping you build expertise in the field that best matches your interests and career goals:

As a professional engineering qualification, the BE(Hons) also includes advanced project work and a final-year Honours project, giving you experience tackling the kinds of complex engineering problems you’ll encounter in your future career.

Fees, Living Costs and Your Student Visa

When planning your studies in New Zealand, there are two major expenses to consider: tuition fees and living costs. UC’s international BE(Hons) tuition for 2027 is about NZD 49,540 (~RM 117,400) for first year and NZD 54,180 (~RM 128,400) for each later year — but the accelerated pathway’s shorter timeline means a lower total bill.

Tuition and fees:

  • Standard international tuition (2027): about NZD 49,540 (~RM 117,400) for first year, then about NZD 54,180 (~RM 128,400) for each of years 2–4.
  • On the accelerated September pathway, the short starter intake (late August to February) is about NZD 24,770 (~RM 58,700) in tuition. Finishing in ~3.25 years instead of four keeps your overall cost lower.
  • You should also budget for additional expenses such as the Student Services Levy and student insurance, which may add several hundred dollars to approximately NZD 950 (~RM 2,250) a year.

Living costs:

  • Christchurch living costs run about NZD 1,400–1,800 (~RM 3,320–4,270) a month — cheaper than Auckland or Wellington.

Your student visa:

For a New Zealand student visa, you must prove you can cover living costs of NZD 20,000 (~RM 47,834) for a year of study — on top of your tuition and a flight home.

  • Living costs: NZD 20,000 (~RM 47,834) per year, or NZD 1,667 (~RM 3,986) a month if you study for less than a year.
  • Evidence that your tuition fees have been paid, or proof that you have sufficient funds to pay them.
  • You’ll also need your Offer of Place from UC, which is the official letter confirming your spot, before you apply.
